Edit: I really wish Amazon would let us change the star ratings. After struggling with this for a few more days, I hate it even more, and I stand by my review below. Here are some additional things I hate.

    1. You start out with a pretty lame starter deck, and everybody else has what I consider a reasonable deck (not too killer). So you’re at a disadvantage right from the start.

    2. By dueling, you earn Duel Points (like money you can use to buy new card packs). Losing a duel only earns you one DP for every turn that passed during the duel. Winning a duel has won me anywhere from 150-300 DP. But because the starter deck is weak, I lose A LOT. I’ve only won about 7 duels out of 30 or so.

    3. If you want to add more cards to your deck, you go to the shop and spend the DP. A pack of 5 cards is 150 DP. Most of the time I get one or maybe 2 new cards in every pack of 5; the rest are repeats. I’ve bought about 16 new packs so far. In fact, I spent 600 DP of hard-earned cash on cards yesterday, so, 20 cards, and I got only one new one in that whole bunch. 19 repeats. A total waste of the DP.

    4. If you have physical cards in your possession, you can key in the 8-digit code on the bottom left of the card in a special shopping area. We thought we’d be able to key in the codes from the decks we use at home and get those cards. Nope. Out of the first 12 cards I tried to do this way, I got a message saying “This card is not in the database.” I finally found one that worked, and it said that it would cost me 600 DP(!!!!!) to buy this ONE CARD.

So, I really hate this game! It’s TOO frustrating. Read below for my original review.

My son and I duel with Yu-Gi-Oh cards so I basically know what I’m doing, though we are not cutthroat and we play mostly for amusement. We decided to get the DS games so we could duel each other wirelessly, which sounded like fun but in practice it’s really stupid compared to dueling in person (with cards) at the table. We pay much more attention to each other when we duel with cards.

Anyway, I have a minor problem with this game which is that all the non-friend characters are REALLY insulting! You ask them for a duel, and most of them brag about how you’re going down (or whatever), but during the duel and afterward (if you lose) you get an eyeful of text about “You’re so lame!” and similar things like that. I don’t think people (kids OR adults) need to have that kind of commentary!

And then I have a major problem which is twofold. Some cards that I have are on the “Forbidden Cards” list. I try to add them to my deck and get an error. Fair enough, but then, why do so many of my opponents have these cards in their decks? The other prong of this complaint is that spell and trap cards have effects on them which sometimes don’t work. A card that is supposed to put your cards into a “not affected by spell & trap cards” zone fails to do so, and the opponent’s spell & trap cards continue to work.

Last issue is that the story mode duel play progresses VERY quickly. Let’s say your opponent’s up, and his play progression is draw – summon a monster – activate a spell card – attack you – your monster takes damage & goes to the graveyard – opponent ends his turn. This entire process (including the graphics of cards flipping, card effects taking place, attacks, and cards moving to graveyard) could be over in as few as 6 seconds. It progresses so quickly that I have no idea what some of his moves were, or the effects of his monsters or spells or traps. He draws, there’s a flurry of screen activity, and then it’s his End Phase. Sometimes my monsters vanish and I have no idea why; clearly as the effect of a spell or trap that I wasn’t quick enough to read. I wish they could go more slowly.

But on the other hand it’s very addicting. We started on the same day and of course my son is light years ahead of me. I don’t know how he does it with the fairly lame cards in the starter deck. I keep finessing my deck and still am not able to beat half the people I meet. Oh well. I’ll keep dueling.

  • If you are a fan:

    pros:

The UI for the duel is well done.

The numbers of cards are great.

You can duel with almost every NPC.

    Races (very simplistic)

Other modes (havent played them yet)

    cons:

    Beginner deck is weak.

    forbidden cards

you have to see a card before you can actually use the code of it.

If you are not a fan:

    Look for something else.

The graphics, the sound & story are lame.

The duels are more than five minutes each so you can get bored fast cause the game is about that.

This is an awesome game but the first boss is too freakin’ HARD! Lenny with his bug deck…in two turns everytime I battle him he has 2 monsters over 2500 ATK points on the field and I never get lucky enough to draw Mirror Force or any other trap that would help me. If he’s that hard I can’t imagine the other bosses.

This game is great for people who love yugioh. It has a majority of cards untill after Rise of Crisis pack but some minor cards are missing that woulnd’t even be missed. probably the best thing abuot this game is the ability to play with others on the wifi and how the rules and ban lish can be updated.

  • My son really loves this game although it takes a long time to build a deck to be able to play on line.He plays it a lot well worth the $$$ for a yu-gi-oh fan.
